Fire & Smoke Damage

After any fire damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:

Is it safe to stay in the house?

Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.

Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.

Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.

Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.

Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.

If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.

Clean and protect chrome with light coating of Vaseline or oil.

Wash house plants on both sides of leaves.

Change HVAC filter.

Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO® Professional at 1-503-652-3997.

Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances, that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.

Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.

Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.

Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Ducks Win! Servpro of MHV wishes you luck in Pasadena! Go DUCKS

Ducks heading to Pasadena
EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon's thorny start has come up roses.

The Ducks came away victorious from what has been called the biggest game in state history, beating the Oregon State Beavers 37-33 in Thursday night's Civil War matchup.

The Ducks are now headed for Pasadena, Calif., to play in the 96th Rose Bowl, where they'll meet Big 10 Conference champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes. It will be the first Oregon appearance in the "Tournament of Roses" since 1995.

Oregon went into the Civil War game ranked No. 7 in the nation, while the Beavers had entered ranked No. 13. The Beavers had hoped to break a 44-year Rose Bowl drought in Thursday night's matchup but the Beavers will have to wait one more year.

It was the first time in the history of the series that the winner of the game will go to Pasadena for the New Year's Day game, without help from other teams.

Civil War highlights
Redshirt freshman LaMichael James ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns Thursday night to send Oregon to the Rose Bowl.

Oregon (10-2, 8-1) claimed the Pac-10 championship with the victory, ending USC's seven-season hold on the title. The Ducks, who have not been to the Rose Bowl since 1995, will face Ohio State in Pasadena on New Year's Day.

LeGarrette Blount, who hadn't played since throwing a punch after Oregon's season-opening loss to Boise State, returned to the field and scored on a 12-yard run in the third quarter.

Afterward, fans thrust Roses into his hands.

"This means everything to me," he said. "I'm kind of at a loss for words."

Oregon State (8-4, 6-3) was vying for its first Rose Bowl berth since the 1964 season. The Beavers will have to wait until the rest of the Pac-10 wraps up the season to find out which bowl they will play in.

It was the first time the annual rivalry game was a winner-takes-all path to Pasadena.

After the game the Duck mascot clutched a bouquet of roses as he was lifted above the fans who rushed the field at Autzen Stadium.

Jeremiah Masoli threw for 201 yards and a touchdown for the Ducks, who capped a stunning turnaround from their 19-8 crash in the season opener against the Broncos.

"I think our team has always been capable of this greatness," Masoli said.

Sean Canfield threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns for the Beavers. Jacquizz Rodgers, the Pac-10's second-leading rusher behind Stanford's Toby Gerhart with an average of 119.4 yards a game, rushed for just 64 yards and a score.

Oregon State had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth but Canfield threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-15 from the Oregon 28.

Masoli took over with more than 6 minutes left and ran out the clock with an impressive drive that featured two fourth-down conversions. He absorbed a hit during a 6-yard scramble on fourth-and-3 and pitched it to Kenjon Barner to set up a 4-yard run on fourth-and-2 that allowed the Ducks to finish it off.

It was a disappointing end for Oregon State, which hung tough for much of the night behind Canfield, Rodgers and his older brother, James.

Justin Kahut kicked three field goals in the first half, Jacquizz Rodgers had a 1-yard run for his school-record 20th rushing TD this season and James Rodgers had a 28-yard touchdown reception with 14 seconds left in the half to give the Beavers a 23-21 lead.

Masoli hit Jeff Maehl for a 73-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Maehl has caught a scoring pass in the past three Civil Wars.

Canfield's 9-yard TD pass to Casey Kjos made it 30-21 early in the third before Blount sparked Oregon's comeback. He had a 12-yard score to pull the Ducks within two points and finished with 51 yards rushing.

Blount was suspended for the season after he punched Boise State defensive end Byron Hout in the aftermath of the Ducks' loss on Sept. 3. He missed eight games, but was kept on scholarship and allowed to practice with the team.

Blount was reinstated in mid-November after meeting certain academic and behavior conditions set by coach Chip Kelly.

"Last home game at Autzen Stadium, and he's a senior," James said about Blount. "I'm happy for him."

Kahut's fourth field goal made it 33-28, but James had a 52-yard scoring run late in the third. Oregon's 2-point conversion failed, and Morgan Flint kicked a 34-yard field goal with 10:13 left for the final margin.

"You have to have a short memory in this game," Masoli said. "You can't let a start get to you."

It will be Oregon's fifth trip to the Rose Bowl. The Ducks have not won the Pac-10 championship since the 2001 season, which they went to the Fiesta Bowl.

Last season Oregon State was headed to the Rose Bowl with a victory in the Civil War. But the Ducks came to Reser Stadium and romped to a 65-38 victory. The year before, the Beavers visited Autzen and won 38-31 in the second overtime.

"It's tough to swallow," Canfield said of missing out on a trip to Pasadena for the second straight season. "I said earlier it was such a great football environment, everything I thought it would be. I'm just disappointed."

Civil War Facts & Figures

Oregon has a nine-game winning streak at Autzen Stadium, considered one of the loudest venues in the Pac-10. Oregon State practiced with piped-in noise this week to prepare.

The Ducks have also won eight straight Pac-10 games at home. Their last loss at Autzen came in the 2007 Civil War, when the Beavers won 38-31 in double OT.

Oregon State has lost only eight turnovers in 11 games. The team has lost only two fumbles all season.

Series record: Oregon leads 56-46-10.

Last meeting: Oregon, 65-38

Ducks or Beavers???

http://www.kmtr.com/news/local/story/Football-fans-consider-post-Civil-War-plans/SopuICjhmUK5XiRvpzD4gg.cspx

Since the winner of Thursday’s Civil War football game will go to the Rose Bowl, fans of both the Ducks and Beavers who want to be there have been considering their options. And local travel agents have been busy putting together packages.

If the Oregon Ducks lose the game, they will go instead to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

If the Oregon State Beavers lose, their bowl possibilities are still uncertain.

Either way, travel agents urge fans not to wait until Thursday or Friday to pick up the phone; people are already booking reservations.

Some families are split between the two schools and are planning to head for Pasadena and the Rose Bowl regardless of who wins. Others are holding off out of fear of jinxing their team.

Lauri Quinby of Premier Travel says a third group has a win-win plan in place.

“Some people are actually booking so that they can go to either game,” says Quinby. “So they're going early enough to go to the Holiday Bowl, and coming back late enough to make it to the Rose Bowl, so they can do either/or.”  Quinby says that because of the holidays, commercial flights are selling out and air fare is going for about $600 for flights out of Portland.  She says charter flights will sell out quickly, even though the prices have not yet been announced.  Her best advice: Call and get on a list now.

Christmas tree safety tips

Carefully decorating Christmas trees can help make your holidays safer.
Watch a Christmas tree fire by clicking on the link below.  This NFPA/UL video demonstrates the flammability of a dry Christmas tree vs. a tree that has been watered regularly.

Christmas tree safety tips

Each year, fire departments respond to an average of 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees. Carefully decorating Christmas trees can help make your holidays safer.

Picking the tree
If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.
Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Placing the tree
Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1–2” from the base of the trunk.
Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.

Lighting the tree
Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.
Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

After Christmas
Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

Local Restoration Service Sparks Discussion on

Thanksgiving Fires

Expert recommends residents prevent their holiday from turning into an emergency by following a few precautions.

Clackamas, OR (Grassroots Newswire) November 6, 2009 -- In anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday, many Clackamas-area cooks are busy stocking up on ingredients and perfecting family recipes. But before they mash the potatoes or roast the turkey, they will want to take precautions to ensure that their kitchen doesn’t end up in flames.

An unfortunate danger of home cooking, residential fires grow in prevalence during the holiday season. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the top day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average of fires reportedly occurring on the holiday.

"Thanksgiving is a day filled with food and family, but it is also a day that presents many hazards to your home," said David Hanson, owner of SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley. "With multiple tasks taking place in the kitchen at once, it is all too easy for cooks to get distracted and for accidents to take place."

Hanson says that by adhering to the following tips, provided by the NFPA, Clackamas-area residents can lessen their chances of a fire ruining their Thanksgiving feast:

· Be present – Fires often start when items cooking are left unattended, so always stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, baking or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the oven or stove.

· Dress accordingly – Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking. Loose clothing can easily catch fire if it comes in contact with a gas flame or electric burner.

· Keep kids out – Enforce a "kid free zone" of three feet around the perimeter of the stove. If kids are present in the kitchen, use the stove's back burners whenever possible and turn pot handles inward to reduce the risk that pots with hot contents will be knocked over.

· Clean, clean, clean – Be sure your stove top and oven are free of grease, which can easily catch fire. Additionally, keep all combustible cooking accessories, such as pot holders, oven mitts and wooden utensils, away from the stove top.

"We recognize people have a lot on their minds when they're entertaining during the holidays, but kitchen safety really should be an utmost priority," added Hanson. "Fires only take a matter of seconds to erupt. The best defense against them is to prevent them from ever happening."

Hanson notes that if a fire should ignite in the oven, residents should turn off the oven, unplug the appliance and remove any dish towels that may be hanging on the front of the oven door. A fire extinguisher should always be at hand to quickly extinguish any fires that may occur on the top of the stove. Of course, in the event of an emergency, Hanson says that residents should never hesitate to call 911.

In the event of damage caused by a residential fire, SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley offers an assortment of services to help local residents quickly recover and restore any damaged property. Within four hours of the initial notification, a SERVPRO Franchise Professional will be on-site to start the mitigation process. Exceptions may apply under certain conditions.

State Farm & LeBron James Share "Memories"...."More Than a Game"

State Farm & LeBron James Share "Memories" in More Than a GameState Farm® and LeBron James Share “Memories” on the Big and Small Screens

Lays-up more than a sponsorship for “More Than a Game”

Bloomington, IL – Sept. 24, 2009 – State Farm® continues its successful marketing relationship with LeBron James, through an integrated campaign supporting the company’s sponsorship of “More Than a Game.” The Lionsgate® documentary opens in select theaters Oct. 2. It tells the true story of five talented young basketball players, including 2009 NBA MVP and All Star® LeBron James, and their remarkable journey from Akron, Ohio, to the national high school championship. A new commercial, “Memories,” will air on TV, online and in theaters nationwide. Fans will also be able to view behind the scenes, never-before-seen documentary footage via www.statefarm.com/lebron starting today.

“State Farm is always looking for innovative ways to engage consumers with our brand,” said Mark Gibson, State Farm’s assistant vice president-advertising. “We have been at the forefront of merging entertainment and branding/advertising opportunities across a variety of properties and market segments. Our sponsorship of More Than a Game, and this new Memories creative, illustrates our core brand message that nothing is more important than being there.”

He continued, “State Farm’s relationship with LeBron James has always been much deeper than him simply being a brand ambassador. His iconic story transcends sport and his remarkable focus on team and commitment to those that he holds closest to his heart is what inspired this spot. Trust, teamwork, loyalty and relationships are all cornerstones of the State Farm brand and are integral parts of the More Than a Game story.”

The new Memories spot, created by Translation, was shot using the actual coach and team members from LeBron’s high school. No detail was ignored, from shooting backgrounds in the actual Saint Vincent’s/Saint Mary’s gym in Akron, to getting the actual jerseys from Buchtel, their biggest rivals. In the end, Memories is about how there is nothing more important than being there. To view “Memories,” click here. Translation also created the online creative and microsite, which utilizes the never-before-seen footage.

Memories debuted on TV Sept. 18. It will also be seen in select movie theaters during National CineMedia (NCM)’s pre-feature program. While individual State Farm agents and zones have used cinema advertising effectively on a local basis, the Memories campaign marks the first time that the company has used the medium nationally.

About MORE THAN A GAME:

Five talented young basketball players from Akron, Ohio, star in MORE THAN A GAME, a remarkable true-life coming of age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity. Coached by a charismatic but inexperienced player’s father, and led by future NBA superstar LeBron James, the “Fab Five’s” improbable nine-year journey leads them from a decrepit inner-city gym to the doorstep of a national high school championship. Along the way, the close-knit team is repeatedly tested—both on and off the court—as James’ exploding worldwide celebrity threatens to destroy everything they’ve set out to achieve together. MORE THAN A GAME combines a series of unforgettable one-on-one interviews with rare news footage, never-before-seen home videos, and personal family photographs to bring this heart-wrenching and wholly American story to life.
